Most skin complaints we hear about don't come from missing some exotic product — they come from a handful of everyday habits quietly working against you. Here are the mistakes we see most often, and the fix for each. None of them requires more than a small change.
1. Washing your face with bar soap or body wash
Body cleansers and classic bar soap are built to strip oil fast — great for your back, harsh for your face. The tight, squeaky after-feel means the skin barrier has been over-cleansed, and facial skin usually answers with dryness, discomfort or extra shine.
The fix: a dedicated facial cleanser matched to your skin — a clarifying gel for oily skin, a gentle foam for normal skin, a cleansing milk for dry-feeling or sensitive-feeling skin.
2. Over-cleansing
Washing your face four times a day, or scrubbing hard after every workout, removes the oils your skin needs to feel comfortable. Twice daily is the sweet spot; after heavy sweat, a lukewarm rinse is usually enough.
3. Skipping moisturiser — especially if you're oily
The most common mistake of all. Dehydrated skin often looks shinier and feels rougher. Even oily skin needs water-based hydration.
The fix: match the texture to your skin — an oil-free gel like the Double Hydration Boost Gel for oily skin, a velvety cream like the Firm-Look Day Cream for normal to dry skin.
4. Treating SPF as a beach-day product
Daily sun exposure adds up on commutes and lunch breaks, not just holidays. A morning SPF habit is the single simplest thing you can do for the long-term look of your skin. Make it the last step of your morning routine, every day, and always the morning after using an exfoliating product.
5. Using every active at once
Vitamin C, AHAs, bakuchiol, a scrub — all in one enthusiastic evening. Stacked actives are a fast route to uncomfortable, reactive-feeling skin.
The fix: one active per routine slot. Vitamin C in the morning (Vitamin C Glow Serum), bakuchiol in the evening (Bakuchiol Night Oil Serum), and an AHA like the Overnight AHA Exfoliating Serum just once or twice a week — on nights you're not using anything else.
6. Exfoliating daily
More exfoliation is not more results — it's more irritation-feel. Once or twice a week with a gentle AHA beats a daily scrub every time.
7. Ignoring the eye area
The skin around the eyes is thinner than the rest of the face, and it's usually where tired looks show first. A lightweight eye cream — dabbed with a ring finger, morning or evening — helps under-eyes look fresher and more hydrated.
8. Quitting after two weeks
Skincare is a repetition game. Appearance benefits build with consistent use over weeks, not days — and the routine you'll keep is the short one.
The fix: pick a realistic three-step routine and stick with it. Curated sets make this nearly automatic, and the My Routine builder lets you assemble your own.
9. Not patch-testing new products
Thirty seconds of caution saves days of discomfort: apply a small amount to the inner forearm before first full use, especially if your skin is sensitive-feeling. It's printed on every OLIRS product page for a reason.
10. Copying someone else's routine
Your gym partner's routine was (hopefully) chosen for their skin, not yours. Oily, dry, sensitive-feeling and mature-looking skin have different needs — that's the whole point of choosing by skin type.
The fix: two minutes with the OLIRS skin quiz gets you a routine matched to your skin, not someone else's.
